5 Things To Consider When Buying A New Refrigerator

tips-for-buying-a-refrigeratorA refrigerator is a serious investment, and you need to get it right. Believe it or not, you have a lot to think about before selecting one. You may think it’s really simple picking a fridge that keeps food fresh and looks good, but it’s a lot more complicated.

Here are five things to keep in mind;

  1. Size

It is vital to check that the refrigerator you select will fit into your kitchen or home. Measure up and keep a note of all the dimensions before you buy. When in doubt, measure again.

They come in various widths, heights, as well as food storage volumes. There should be one to suit every single kitchen.

  1. Storage capacity

Also, think about your grocery buying habits and determine how much storage space you’ll need inside your fridge freezer.

Some things to consider include;

  • Amount of door space inside
  • How many fridge shelves would you like to have?
  • Number of salad boxes
  • Bottle holders and wine racks
  • Integrated ice trays

In the same vein, you´ll want to consider the freezer capacity or how many freezer drawers the chosen appliance has and how much foodstuff each of them will take. Storage capacity is typically described as the food storage volume´, and it is measured in liters. When the amount in liters is higher, the storage capacity will be higher.

  1. Style

Even though traditional white fridges are still common, there are so many other choices to think about if you like trying something a bit different. Black and silver fridges are both becoming a lot more popular, and for people who need bigger capacities and have sufficient space, side-by-side fridges are an ideal option with a very distinct style.

  1. Energy efficiency

The original cost of a fridge isn´t the sole factor to consider when deciding on what you can afford; think about how much it’ll cost to use it in the long term. When you get a more energy efficient model, you’ll save money because it uses less electricity. All freezers and fridges are rated A+ to B with A+ rating as the most energy efficient.

  1. Additional features

While you will be buying a fridge mainly to keep drinks and food frozen and chilled, there are some extra features that could come in handy – it is your decision.

Other popular extra features include;

Frost free function – this allows for an easy appliance implying that you will never be made to spend time defrosting your items.

Chilled water dispenser – generally linked with the side-by-side style fridge freezers. However, there are more inexpensive combo-fridges available that also have them.

Thin model types – these save space in kitchens with limited space.

5 Things To Consider When Buying A New Stove / Oven

things-to-consider-when-buying-a-stoveBuying a new stove or oven is not only a significant investment but it is also a time for consideration of the main user and the frequency of use. The objectives that a buyer needs to keep in mind the most are the utility of the oven or range, the need for convenience of the chef or cook, and the fit of the surfaces with existing cabinet space and counters.

Here are the five important things to consider when buying a new range or oven.

1) What you can afford

Cost is naturally a limiting factor in the choice of a range or oven. Prices can run from $300 to more than $2,000 depending on the size of the unit, the type of heating, the power source, and additional features.

And the sticker price is not all that should be considered in costs. Any added wiring or piping for a new power source, construction for venting, and accommodation for different size must be included in the cost. Delivery is also another cost. As are any warranties you opt for.

So before you shop, put together a budget. That’ll make shopping much more efficient.

2) Color match

The front of an oven or range and the controls are normally all that can be seen when the unit is in operation. The color choice is huge. If you’re just replacing your oven, be sure that when you select a new unit that the shade matches the other appliances. Believe me, I’ve seen a number of kitchens where the appliances were all different shades of white and beige. It looks goofy. So if you want a consistent look to your kitchen make sure your shades match.

3) Size

Ovens and ranges are available in a tremendous selection of sizes. The general rule of thumb is that the more complex the oven or range is the larger it is. The buyer can find a unit that fits the existing space but the desire for more convenience and increased utility usually override picking a size for the existing space.

4) Placement

Newer homes and remodeled cabinetry have taken the oven and range off the wall. A centralized location for an oven or range in an island provides increased access and convenience to food preparation surfaces. The need or desire for a more convenient work space may mean the oven needs a new location.

5) Style, Power, and Convenience

Anyone who is buying a new oven or range for the first time in 10 years or more will be amazed at the change that has occurred in oven styles, power sources, controls, settings, number of ovens per unit, and the types of burners. The desire to have the newest and best often demands a change in the counter space and cabinetry where the oven or range will be located.

You only buy a few ovens or ranges in a life time. Redoing the space for an oven or range and possibly changing the entire look of the kitchen is a definite consideration when buying a new oven or range. Contact Distinctive Cabinets of Green Bay for more information about cabinets and counters before you make the decision to buy a range or oven.

5 Questions to Ask Before Remodeling Your Bathroom

Kitchen Island Questions to Ask

One extremely popular item that home owners constantly request is the kitchen island. Nearly all the new home constructions and kitchen remodels we do incorporate some variation of a kitchen island. And it’s not surprising. Islands are extremely versatile and can be tailored to each home owners’ needs. They come is all shapes, sizes, and styles, and they can have an array of functionality.

But if you’ve ever wanted an island, here are a few questions you’ll want to ask yourself and/or your designer:

  1. What size island can you legitimately fit into your kitchen?
  2. Do you want your island to match your existing cabinets and countertops? Or do you want a unique island that stands out from the rest of your kitchen?
  3. Do you plan to have kids, family, relatives or friends sit around the island? If so, how many people should the island seat? I don’t know about you, but I have four kids, and if our island only seated 3, one kid would be ticked 🙂
  4. Do you need extra storage / cutting board / trash bins / etc housed in your island?
  5. Do you need appliances built it? What about a wine fridge or other?
  6. Do you plan to cook on it? Do you need a sink?
  7. Should it be stationary or portable?
  8. What’s your budget?

Design Tip

Kitchen islands are a great opportunity to add some extra pizzaz and excitement to your kitchen. Don’t feel obligated to be matchy-matchy with the rest of your kitchen. Contrasting materials from your cabinets and counters can look great and set your island and kitchen apart. So feel free to experiment with the design and consider less traditional materials. Butcher block, concrete, glass, and other counter materials make for great conversation pieces. Below are some examples of recent islands we’ve built, but if you’re ever looking for tons of inspiration, just go to Pinterest and search for custom kitchen cabinets islands. It’s amazing what you’ll find.

Inset vs Overlay Cabinets

One of the many options you have when designing your new custom cabinets in Green Bay is the type of doors. One door choice in particular is “inset” or “overlay”cabinet doors. So what is the difference?  Have a look at the photos below. Notice how on the inset cabinet doors, the door literally sits inside the cabinet box, flush with the cabinet’s exterior. On the other hand, the overlaid cabinet doors lay on the outside of the cabinet box.

Inset Kitchen Cabinets

Overlay Kitchen Cabinets

For the most part, the choice between the two door styles is aesthetics. The inset cabinets give a very clean and modern look to cabinets, while overlaid doors are more traditional. Both styles have their place, and both can be sleek and beautiful. So it’s mostly a matter of which look you prefer.

However, while the choice usually comes down to looks, it is important to note a few differences in the door choices. First off, inset cabinets require more precision and thus are more difficult to construct. As a result they are usually a bit more expensive to build compared to overlay doors. In addition, since inset doors nest within the cabinet boxes, they are prone to sticking and jamming as the wood doors and cabinets expand and shrink over time (due to humidity). Thus inset cabinets may need additional adjustment over time. Lastly, if you are looking to maximize space, overlay doors are the way to go since they do not require taking up space within the cabinet boxes. While you don’t gain a lot of room with overlay doors, you do maximize your cabinet space.

If you are looking for more examples of overlay or inset doors, or if have questions about which style is right for your kitchen or bath, give us a call. We’d be happy to talk it through with you.

3 Cheap & Easy Ways to Add Curb Appeal

Whether you’re in Brown County, Door County, or elsewhere in Wisconsin, summer time is beautiful. It’s a time to get out in the yard and enjoy the warm weather. It’s also a time to make our yards look pretty. Whether you’re just tired of looking at a messy yard, are ready for a change, or are getting your home ready to sell, here are three easy and inexpensive ways to add immediate curb appeal to any home.

Spruce Up the Front Door
Adding some interest to your front entry is a simple and inexpensive way to add immediate curb appeal to your home. Try painting your door a color that coordinates with your home’s color. But be sure to add some contrast between the door and other colors on your home so your door stands out and “pops”. If your house is green with white shutters, consider painting your door yellow so it stands out. New house numbers and door wreaths are other great ways to add curb appeal to your front door and to create an inviting entryway. And for a little added touch, try a potted plant or two near your doorway.

What’s it going to cost?
If you’re just painting your door, you can pick up a quart of exterior paint for about $10. A paintbrush will run you a few more bucks if you don’t have one. Door numbers can be purchased for a few dollars each. And a potted plant starts around $7. For less than $40 you can transform your doorway and home!

Clean Up the Lawn
A nice looking lawn is one of those things that nearly everyone can do themselves. Grab your mower and start with a nice cut. That’s instant curb appeal. If you have dandelions and other weeds, it’s best to pull them to reduce the risk of them growing back. The other option is to use some lawn weed killer and spray those pesky weeds. Just be sure to spray on a nice dry day, so rain doesn’t wash away the pesticide before it has a chance to kill the weeds. Also, be sure to use “lawn weed killer”, not “grass and weed killer.” If you start spraying lawn killer, your lawn will look worse than when you started cleaning it up. If you need to fill in some dead spots in the lawn, seed is an inexpensive way to fill in those missing patches. Or if you’re in a hurry to make your lawn look nice, you can pick up a few pieces of sod from a garden center and drop them in. Either way, just be sure to give the seed and sod enough water while they’re growing in.

What’s it going to cost?
If you own a home, it’s likely you own a mower, so no added cost there. However weed killer will run you $10 or so. You can pick up a small bag of seed for around the same price. And a piece or two of sod will run about $4 each. Not much cost here, just a little sweat required to make your lawn look great and to add some curb appeal.

Grass

Beautify Your Beds
Clean garden beds are a great way to add immediate curb appeal to your home. Start by pulling any weeds, and/or using weed killer on them. If you have existing plants that are overgrown, either dig some up and rearrange them, or get rid of the excess. If you have bushes in your garden, give those a trim too.

If your problem is that you don’t have enough plants, try planting some low maintenance perennials that will look nice year after year. Yarrow is a pretty yellow flower that rabbits won’t eat (a huge problem for plant lovers in Green Bay) and it’s low maintenance and will come back year after year. Tulips are beautiful in spring, but prone to rabbit. Hostas are great too, although they don’t have a pretty flowers.

Once you’re happy with the plantings and have removed weeds and over grown plants, the final touch is adding fresh mulch. Much like with your front door, be sure to add a mulch that is a coordinating, yet contrasting, color to your home’s color. If your house is beige, you probably don’t want a light colored Cypress mulch since there’s no contrast. Instead, try a color like a dark brown or red mulch. Simply pick up a few bags from Menards or Home Depot and spread the mulch generously throughout your garden bed; being sure to not pour the mulch onto your plants.

What’s it going to cost?
Again if you need to buy weed killer, it will cost you $10 or so. Buying some nice perennials or annuals and run you as little as $5 per plant. However you can always check Craigslist’s “Free” section since lots of people in the Green Bay area post plants there for free (since they’re getting rid of their over grown plants). Lastly, you can get some great deals on mulch. Menards usually has sales in spring, with large bags starting at $2 each. You can also find mulch at Aldi in spring for about $2 per bag too. So once again, for less than $50 and a couple hours of “exercise”, you can add a ton of curb appeal to your home!

Spring Cleaning & Home Maintenance Tips

Spring cleaning is a time-consuming task that homeowners must undertake if they’re going to maintain their homes properly. Although the inside of a person’s house can require a deep-cleaning session, the outside typically requires the most physical work. Nature’s various elements attack a home’s exterior throughout the year. Rain, snow, hail, winds, cold spells, heat spells, and fallen foliage all have their negative effects on a home’s overall ability to operate properly.

First and foremost, homeowners, especially those in the Green Bay area—because of the constant weather fluctuations—should be sufficiently prepared for the home maintenance period. Gas-operated equipment should be inspected, cleaned, tuned and adequately fueled. There’s nothing more irritating than getting into the cleaning spirit and ending up face to face with a lawnmower that has run out of gasoline.

One of the most important aspects of preserving a home’s integrity is ensuring that the siding is in good shape. A homeowner can rent or purchase a standard pressure washer and give the entire house a decent wash. Not only does doing this enable an owner to decide if the house needs a new layer of paint, but it helps keep mold from growing.

Homeowners need to thoroughly clean downspouts and rain gutters if they are going to function properly during the next storm. Clogged gutters can allow accumulated water to cause unsightly erosion to the nearby soil. Gutters and downspouts that are clogged with debris are also prone to encouraging mold growth. These molds can then expand to the wood beneath gutters and cause unwanted rotting.

Windows and window screens should be given a complete washing. Although a pressure washer can be used on most glass windows, the screens should be washed with a garden hose and allowed to air dry. Windows that are cracked need to be repaired or replaced immediately to prevent further damage to the home and belongings. Window screens that have even the slightest hole can allow bugs and foreign objects to enter the home. If the screens are more than ten years old, sun damage has likely made the protective fibers exceedingly brittle. It is then a good idea to replace them.

A house’s roof is undoubtedly the most important part of a home’s defense against the elements. Leaks can allow water to seep through and cause extensive water damage. Gaining access to the roof can be a dangerous task, and some homeowners aren’t physically capable of doing so. Green Bay residents should schedule an appointment with one of the many roof maintenance services. Individuals who inspect their own roofs need to look for cracks, decay and vulnerable spots. These problems are easily repaired but can lead to expensive damage if they’re left unaddressed.

Adequate landscaping is another component of completing spring maintenance chores. Homeowners should trim hedges that are near the house; otherwise the overgrowth can scratch paint and puncture the siding. One of the most common forms of damage that occurs to a house is caused by fallen tree limbs. Tree branches may not appear large, but they can weigh hundreds of pounds. A small amount of trimming can save thousands of dollars in home repairs. If climbing to extreme heights is required to effectively trim the problematic limbs, homeowners should call a professional tree trimming service. Even though their services might seem expensive, they will save time and money in the long run.

Next, a homeowner should meticulously inspect the home’s foundation. Cement slabs should be free of cracks and clutter. As a rule, if a standard coin can fit inside a crack, the foundation needs to be inspected by a professional immediately. A flawed foundation can literally reshape a house, causing irreparable damages to the frame. Because safety is paramount, foundation damages should be assessed by a qualified professional.

On the list of priorities, fence posts and fencing materials need to be tested to confirm they’re still operational. In many instances, fences are purely decorative, but functional models help prevent stray animals from wandering into a person’s yard. Families with young children should look into installing a protective fence if they haven’t already done so.

The last of the major outside maintenance chores is to make sure that the sprinkler system operates properly. Damaged sprinkler heads and broken water lines can cause flooding. Floods can quickly run up utility bills and kill patches of grass. It’s also a good idea to have the septic tank assessed if it is beginning to present critical problems such as backing up and overflowing.

The homeowner also has a few indoor maintenance requirements to address. Because wind and mold have a habit of damaging wooden spaces, cupboards and shelves inside the garage should be monitored. Decayed cabinets need to be replaced. Often, it’s quicker and cheaper to have an experienced carpenter install new cabinets and shelves. They can also inspect the rafters that hang over many garage floors. If these areas have suffered extensive termite damage and decay, they can deteriorate at unpredictable rates and cause the stored contents to fall atop vehicles. Damaged vehicles typically exceed the cost required to repair rafters and storage spaces.

With all of this in mind, Green Bay homeowners, as well as homeowners across the nation, can feel confident about their homes’ defense systems during the winter months. The only thing for an owner to do is sit back, relax and admire the work.

Stock

Stock cabinets are premade and non-customizable. What you see if what you get. Typically these come in 12-inch or 24-inch depths and in 3-inch increments in width. The materials can range in quality greatly, and this will affect the cost. Some can come preassembled so that they can be readily installed, and other can come as ready-to-assemble. This is a good option if you are in a hurry to renovate a space as you can pick these up in a big box store or have them shipped to you, however they may not fit your space exactly. Choosing Cabinet Stains

Cabinet Staining Green BayRefinishing the look of your kitchen can be as simple as a new coat of stain or paint on your cabinets, but there are many different types to choose from. Whether you have brand new wood in your kitchen, or you have older cabinets you are trying to refresh, each type of stain has its advantages. At Distinctive Cabinets we can help you choose which type of stain is right for your home and family.

Eco-Friendly Stains

Eco-friendly means that these methods are better for the environment and the air inside of your home. These types of products also tend to be the most traditional types of natural finishes. Products such as linseed oil, beeswax and safflower oil are all healthy for your home environment, however these finishes can be an undertaking. There are also synthetic options that mimic these natural results, however be sure to check the label to make sure it is low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound). These are used on unfinished wood to bring out the natural grain and give the wood some protection, but not necessarily from scratches.

Wood Stains and Dyes

Wood stains and dyes add color that sinks directly into unfinished wood, however it does not add scratch protection by itself. If you’d like to change the color of your existing cabinets, this is an option, however remember that since this sinks into the wood grain itself, it can be hard to remove or go any lighter once applied. This does mean you can customize the color of your cabinets to fit the décor you desire. There are natural, water-based and oil-based types of these stains, but be sure to use one that is for indoor use. Coats of clear protective products can also be added once your stain is dried to give different sheens and protection from scratches and dings from your kiddos running around the kitchen.

Varnishes

Varnishes can come in all tints, textures and are made from all different materials. What they all have in common is that they are all a hard protective coat that can either save your older cabinets’ characteristics or protect and enhance the new finish you just added. Multiple layers of varnish can be added to either create a different look or to enhance the durability of the coat. Remember though that the more coats of varnish that are applied, the more difficult they are to remove. Water-based products are low odor and easier to apply, while oil-based are more durable but can be difficult to work with.

Alternate Options

If you’re looking to change the look of your cabinets without actually stripping and staining them, there are other options. One of the easiest and quickest ways is to paint your cabinets. While this can be a fix for many homes, you will lose the characteristics of your wood grain and color. You can make the paint style glossy, flat, distressed or antiqued, so your options are many. Be sure to properly prep and clean all surfaces and use an indoor paint. Another advantage is that you can keep extra paint of the same lot on hand to cover up any scratches that may happen over the years.

Glazes on already finished cabinets can add a unique look too. A glaze is a semi-transparent wash of color applied over the existing finish that offer a less consistent finish. Where the glaze sinks into depressions in the wood it creates a darker spot creating contrast in the look.

Remember, when choosing the type of stain or finish for your cabinets, or redoing your cabinets to refresh your kitchen, the needs of your kitchen and family come first. From gorgeous natural, hand-rubbed finishes to durable varnishes, there are many options, and Distinctive Custom Cabinets of Green Bay can help you choose yours!

Indoor Home Winterizing

Winterizing the interior of your home can not only save you hassle later in the winter, but will save you money over the season. Here are a few steps you can take to ensure that you and your family stay warm during the cold months in Green Bay.

Furnace

Your furnace is what keeps your home warm during winter, so it is important to do some regular maintenance. Simple steps such as changing you filter and checking that the fan is lubricated and running smoothly will ensure you a cozy home all season long. This applies to both new and older model furnaces.

Windows

Drafty windows can cause you chills in the wintertime. The first thing you should check is the seal around your window casings. Old or cracked caulk can let air leak in. Begin by using a stiff-blade putty knife to scrape off any old caulk or peeling paint from around the exterior perimeter of the window. Using warm soapy water, clean the area to be caulked. Next, reapply caulk being sure to use an exterior-grade caulk. Either 100% silicone sealant or a “siliconized” acrylic caulk work best.

Moving to the interior of your windows, using window insulating kits is easy and money saving. These kits block cold air by sealing the entire window behind a large sheet of shrink-wrap plastic. The plastic adheres to the interior window casing with double-sided tape; you then use a blow dryer to seal it in place. Window insulation kits are very effective at sealing out drafts and can be easily removed when spring weather arrives.

Weatherstripping

Sealing gaps around your doors that are leaking air is another step to take to ensure your family keeps warm. Depending on the type of doors and windows your home has, you have many options for weatherstripping. Check for any air leaks around your doors or windows, and then purchase and install the weatherstripping that has the properties that best fit your needs. Kits are available at most local hardware stores and are easily installable. Be sure to wipe clean and dry the surface you will be weatherstripping before installing the insulation. Also, an easy and visual way to identify where air is seeping into your home is to take a lit incense, or a cigarette if you smoke, and put it in front of your doors and windows. If the smoke is blown sideways, rather than going straight up, you know air is coming in.

So there you go, a few tips that almost anyone can do. Keeping your home winter ready will not only save you money, but will ensure that you and your family stay warm for the cold winter months.
